Looking Back with Gratitude:
As we make our way into a new year, it is most appropriate that we take a moment to reflect on 2022. During a time of world uncertainty, mixed with a bit of chaos, our Village faired quite well. We grew our membership. Our volunteers were able to complete nearly all of the member requests, even with a two-fold increase in requests. We were able to put on a highly successful Octagon Barn community event.

Social engagement returned to center stage with the excellent turnout for our by-weekly Coffee Talks, Lunch Bunch in SLO and North County, our summer picnic, and our fall “Gratitude” event. SLO Village had an eventful and connection-filled year.
Because we are a community that helps one another, there are numerous people responsible for this success. First, we need to thank our volunteers. They make themselves available for many service requests and provide a friendly face and a much-valued social connection. We also must thank our many generous donors that make the Village operation possible. And last, but not least, we must thank our Village’s Board members and Operations Manager for their leadership.
SLO Village had an excellent year indeed!

What is the Next Step in Your Aging Plan?
As older adults age, questions begin to arise and one may think, "What is next, and what resources are available?"
SLO County has three important organizations to consider for help and support. SLO Village provides the best first step to supporting independence as you age. SLO Village offers social connection through activities and services for our full members who need help from transportation to non-professional handyperson projects. SLO Village does not provide medical care or meal preparation. However, if you need medical care and more support with your membership to SLO village, consider contacting Wilshire Health & Community Services.
Wilshire offers comprehensive healthcare in the home for home health and hospice patients. This healthcare is supplemented with social-emotional support for patients and their families, including music therapy and spiritual counseling. In addition to serving patients, Wilshire also provides wide-ranging older adult supportive services like counseling, therapy, transportation, and friendly visits to keep homebound, and isolated older adults connected and healthy. Memberships with both SLO Village and Wilshire are highly encouraged for those needing more care.
Hospice SLO County offers gentle support for end-of-life patients. They believe that "The end of life deserves as much respect as the beginning." Hospice SLO County has provided county-wide non-medical in-home respite care, emotional support, practical assistance, and comfort to individuals, their families, and caregivers who are coping with a life-limiting illness. Hospice SLO County Grief Counseling services offer individual and family counseling and group support to anyone grieving a death regardless of when or how the death occurred.
All these steps are important to consider in your aging plan!

Volunteers Needed in SLO Village!
Empower your community by becoming a SLO Village volunteer! SLO Village is a local membership organization that encourages at-home independence and empowers older adults to remain in their homes as they age. Our members need transportation to appointments, gardening, technology assistance, home maintenance work, and more. Volunteers choose their own assignments to fit their own schedules. Being a volunteer is a rewarding and meaningful experience, and we’d love to have you join our community! If you are interested, click here.
