Message From
the Board
As we move through our
second year of operation, SLO Village continues
its journey of helping seniors navigate the
challenges and opportunities of aging. We
continue to grow, adding new members and
volunteers. We continue to expand our services
into the nine communities that we
serve.
Our efforts to transform the aging
process here in our community have not gone
unnoticed. We have appeared in the Tribune and
SLO Spotlight magazine, and been interviewed by
KCBX for a story that will be aired in
July. To our delight, we were also chosen as the
“Senior Citizen Program of the Year” by the
Central Coast Area Agency on
Aging.
Clearly, the credit for this early
success goes to our members and volunteers who
share their skills, support and expertise with
each other.
We are most grateful
for those of you who have embraced a better
experience of aging in our
community.

Honored as Senior
Citizen Program of the Year
SLO Village
The Area Agency on Aging is
responsible for planning, coordinating and
implementing programs that promote the health,
dignity, and wellbeing of older adults.
The agency is funded by the federal
government.
San Luis Obispo's Area
Agency on Aging honored SLO Village as Senior
Citizen Program of the Year for 2018. SLO
Village received the award at an event
celebrating Older Americans Month presented at
the Agency’s 35th annual Celebration Tea, held
at Sierra Vista Hospital on May 31.
The
theme for Older Americans Month 2018 was “Engage
at Every Age,” which AAA states “emphasizes the
idea that you are never too old (or too young)
to take part in activities that enrich your
physical, mental and emotional
well-being.”

California
Villages
Village Movement California
California leads the
Village Movement with more than 50 Villages
across the state. Village Movement
California (VMC) is a new coalition of these
Villages. SLO Village, a founding member of VMC,
recognized the value and strength of working
together with the other California Villages.
As a statewide coalition, VMC has the reach
and resources to assemble data and publicize
findings on issues important to the aging
community among the policy makers in
governmental agencies, foundations and health
care.
We look forward to the value of
working closely with VMC as they help create
awareness of a better way of
aging.
VMC funded a
professional marketing survey and developed an
inaugural branding strategy for California
villages. We are in the process of adapting that
material for our organization, and will roll out
SLO Village 2.0 at a community event this
fall.

Revolutionize
the Experience of Aging
Save The
Date
We’re thrilled
to have Charlotte Dickson, the Executive Director
of VMC, coming to SLO for this event. She will
give a talk about how villages “Revolutionize
the Experience of Aging” on October 3
at Dignity Health Copeland Health Education
Pavilion in San Luis Obispo.
You are invited to meet
Charlotte and other community leaders focused on
navigating the challenges and opportunities of
aging.
Charlotte has devoted her career
to building healthy communities for people of
all ages with an emphasis on racial and economic
justice. We are happy to be working with
her and excited about her coming to SLO
Village.

Spotlight
Mel Warner
Mel Warner, one of our
members, recently needed some help getting some
photos off the internet for a memoir he was
working on. Getting the photos is a simple
process, but I became intrigued when his request
was for photos of the US embassy in Cuba shorty
after World War II.
As it turned out,
Mel was a member of the Office of Strategic
Services. The OSS, America's strategic
intelligence system implemented during World War
II, is the foundation of the present-day Central
Intelligence Agency (CIA). There are fewer than
100 remaining OSS veterans.
OSS missions
resulted in some of the bravest acts of the war
and forever changed the course of
history.
On March 21, 2018 OSS Veterans,
including Mel Warner, were presented with the
Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian
honor the United States can bestow. A single
gold medal has been struck to collectively honor
the members of the OSS. Copies of the gold medal
were presented to each OSS Veteran.

Workshop
Advance
Health Care Directive
What is an Advance Health
Care Directive? How does it differ from a
POLST? Will your Advance Health Care Directive
protect you? What Advance Health Care
Directive form is right for you? Who
should you select as your health care
agent?
Anya Kaufman, LCSW, from
Senior Connections will lead the workshop.
She’ll answer these questions and more.
Anya has more than 18 years of experience as a
social worker and hospital social worker. She
specializes in working with older adults and
family caregivers and has helped hundreds of
people complete advance health care directives
so loved ones can carry out their wishes for
end-of-life care.
Please join us if you
have not completed an Advance Directive, have
not reviewed your Advance Directive in the last
year, or want to change your Advance
Directive. People who attend the July 17
session may come back on July 24 to complete the
form, then get it signed, witnessed and
copied.
Registration is required as space
is limited.

as peers. Members live in their own homes
and rely on volunteers for practical services
that support their independence. SLO
Village recognizes the importance of community
and the wisdom that comes with age.
Together, members and volunteers create a
purposeful and powerful space for living,
learning, and courage as we take on the
future.

Light Up SLO
Village
Free
LED Lights
Are you a member or a volunteer of
SLO Village? Would you like to reduce your
electric bill and do something nice for our
planet?
Go through your home and count the number outdated
incandescent bulbs that you are using. Then
click on Lights or give us a call 805 242-6440, we
will provide at no cost replacement LED lights.
We have many types of lights. Let us know what
you need.
If you are a member and need
help figuring out what you need or installing
the lights, give us a call. We will have a
volunteer help you.
If you are not a member or volunteer,
bulbs can be purchased for $2.00 each. Money
from the sale of LED lights will go to help
subsidize low income
members. |

Join The
Village
Please join
us as a:
Member. SLO
Village includes members who receive services
and participate in activities, and social
members who participate in activities but do not
receive services. Some members are also
volunteers who provide services to others in the
Village. Even if you do not need all of
the benefits SLO Village provides right now, you
can help ensure that SLO Village will be here
when you are ready to participate by joining as
a dues-paying member.
If you are not ready
to join, please refer people to us if you think
they might enjoy SLO Village activities or
utilize our services.
Volunteer. We
are looking for people to help cover our
members’ service requests. Volunteers choose the
assignments they want. The service might be to
provide transportation on a specific date and
time, or handyman services with an open date and
time. You can select as few or as many service
requests as you like.
We also need
people that would like to work on Village teams.
We are looking to form some teams to help with
new member intake, volunteer coordination,
social activities and other important SLO
Village operations. If you would like to work
with Village members and volunteers, please let
us know.
